Bancontact Payconiq Company hardly needs an introduction in Belgium. The Payconiq by Bancontact app is used for millions of transactions each year. The consumer-side experience has been profoundly improved and maintained throughout the years, and the merchants side now also received a dedicated app. Payconiq GO, built using Flutter, helps merchants to take control of their Payconiq payments in a much more professional and secure way.

01 — Challenge

How might we tackle the security and user experience challenges for merchants?

Bancontact Payconiq Company has been offering easy, intuitive payments for consumers through the Payconiq by Bancontact-app and wanted that same security and ease of use on the merchant’s side. Their challenge was streamlining this payment process for merchants while enhancing the user experience.

The existing system uses stickers for consumers to scan. While it is a straightforward solution, we knew there were improvements to be discovered. Our primary focus was minimising manual errors, misuse, and fraud even further.

02 — Solution

Empowering merchants with a bespoke app for seamless transactions.

Initially, Payconiq came to us with the idea of integrating the merchant app into the existing user app. After thorough research, we suggested developing a dedicated app tailored specifically to merchants, built upon the existing backend. This app would empower merchants by allowing them to input transaction amounts, generate QR codes, and seamlessly process payments from cards and electronic meal vouchers, all within a user-friendly interface. By creating a separate platform for merchants built against an existing back-end, distinct from the consumer-facing app, we ensured clarity, efficiency, and enhanced functionality.

03 — Approach

Prioritising user needs by developing essential features with cutting-edge technology.

The main focus for this project was the development of key functionalities, such as QR code generation and payment processes. Through rigorous user testing and feedback collection, conducted both in-house and through guerrilla-style engagement with potential users, we refined the app's features and interface. Using innovative technologies like Flutter, In The Pocket maximised efficiency and flexibility, enabling seamless app development and deployment across multiple platforms.

04 — Outcome

An undeniable impact on merchant payments.

By September 2024, the app had already facilitated over 750,000 transactions since its launch in November 2023, with peaks of up to 12,000 payments per day. Bancontact Payconic Company is hard at work to process new merchant applications and facilitate onboarding, and yet the app's impact on merchant payments is already undeniable. By prioritising user experience, efficiency, and adaptability, we have set a new standard in the realm of digital payment solutions for events and small merchants.
